Active radios

It is the first national network of community radios supplied a 100% by an alternative electric system: vegetable oil electric generators. In Democratic Republic of Congo, the vegetable oil is provided by the radio listeners themselves.

In 2011, a new adventure begins thanks to old Indian motors from the early 20th century after being restored and then able to run on natural local fuel. A long journey starts for these motors: from the Gujarat State in India, to Brussels, Kinshasa and then the technical workshops in Kikwit, the convoy finally reaches Isiro, Beni and Oicha after a few thousands miles along the Congo river. Now, 12 community radios are daily broadcasting thanks to this new fuel produced and provided by the radio listeners themselves. Today, thanks to this initiative of RFI Planète Radio and to the beneficiary communities’ will and solidarity, peoples from these remote zones get to be connected again through their community radio.
